Now not to sound neurotic, just saying that when you go outside take time to look around your house. Find bushes and tree limbs that have grown up against your home and trim them back. Look for piles of wood, or other material and remove it. Reposition wood piles away from the house, and good housekeeping outside will really pay off.
I walk around my house looking for any signs of activity too. Since my house is white, I can see the little black dots now and then. In the past they were regular sugar ants, a max bait trap took care of that in a few days, but I keep an eye out for the real threat, Carpenter Ants.
