We've had some breaks in winter, but nothing that really scared me. I figured any foraging would be just that, foraging. Don't think the Carpenter Ants were thinking of trying to establish any new colonies, when another quick cold snap would kill them off. But that has all changed. Spring is here, and the Carpenter Ants have woken up.
So has the Carpenter Ant Killer!
I've done some walking around my house, all part of what any home owner should do now and then to prevent Carpenter Ants invading your home. I've made some mental notes, identified problem areas, seen the ENEMY!
Problem Areas I've seen, like with any home:
- Some tree branches have become permanently bent downward, guessing from the winter's snow weight, and are now touching my house. Something that didn't happen till winter, so I checked all trees.
- All Ants are hyper. I'm guessing with Spring in the air, everyone has Spring-Fever, especially Carpenter Ants.
- Found Carpenter Ant Activity. Even though it was away from the house, it was in my yard, so I will have to monitor if this colony is going to try and expand into my home. For today, they live, but if they invade...
- Neighbor's tree, found a neighbor's tree that looked dead until the hottest parts of summer, is touching one of my trees. I've seen many ants on his tree, and around the ground, so once again, I'll have to keep watching for that colony making it to my yard, and trying to enter my house.
I recommend you too, check around your house for Carpenter Ants. While doing this, you can check for the tell-tale signs of termites too. Good luck, and Happy Spring!
